OUR CHAMBERS
Lucas Chambers was established in 1997 by a group of seven barristers: Dennis Lynch KC (DCJ), Gregory McGuire, Simon Lewis, Peter O’Neill, Paul Brown, Adrian Donaldson (dec’d) and John Callanan (dec’d). The chamber name was chosen to recognise the Honourable Geoffrey Lucas AC, QC, a Judge of the Supreme Court who presided from 1979-1982.
Justice Lucas was the trial judge in the infamous “Whiskey Au-Go-Go” fire-bombing case. Both defendants Stuart and Finch were convicted of murder by reason of a combination of sections 7, 8 and the felony murder provision. In Stuart v The Queen (1974) 134 CLR 426 at 432 Menzies J stated: “…in finally leaving the matter to the jury the learned trial judge adopted what I regard as a course which could not have been bettered…”
This case still holds great intrigue for the Australian public with the Queensland government holding two official inquests since the trial and the media reporting the case as one of the greatest crimes of 20th-century Australia. The story of what exactly happened that night remaining a mystery.
Since foundation, Lucas Chambers has expanded substantially in members and occupies the entire floor at level 13, 420 George Street, Brisbane, directly opposite the Supreme and District Courts law precinct.
