Mal was called to the bar in 1998. Since that time, he has practiced primarily in criminal law. He has been counsel in hundreds of trials during his career.

Over the years he has presented conference papers on issues concerning criminal law. He is a member of the Legal Aid Queensland complex case panel. He is also a life member of the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union having served as the Chairman of their judiciary for 20 years.
